Training

Site Training

To perform work at the SNS site, you must first take two site-specific training classes:

(a) ASD Front End Safety Training: Contact Sam McKenzie to schedule this class.

(b) Knight/Jacobs Site Safety Training. This class is offered twice daily, at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Go to the Knight/Jacobs safety trailer, near the gate on the east side of the site.

Individual Training

Individuals are required to stay current with both ASD "GoTrain" training and other required ORNL training classes.

[At present we haven't addressed training for: LOTO, Rad Worker II training, or "Working hot".]

Job Hazard Analyses

Our group has a set of job hazard analyses (JHAs) covering routine fabrication, installation, and testing in the areas in which we work. If you plan to perform work in any of these areas, you must first read, understand, and sign the JHA for that area. In addition, if you need to perform work not explicitly covered under these routine JHAs, you must prepare a new and specific JHA for that work.

Here are our routine JHAs:

Some specific omissions from our routine JHAs are listed below. Before this type of work can be performed, our routine JHAs must be revised or new and dedicated JHAs must be developed:

• Lock Out / Tag Out (LOTO).Our policy at the time this was written was to let others perform LOTOs.When the time arrives that we need to do these ourselves we will have to revise our JHAs accordingly.
• Work in radiation areas.
• Working on energized equipment (i.e. working hot).
• [Other?Man lift and forklift operation?]

PPE requirements are generally covered in the corresponding Job Hazard Analysis. A summary of PPE requirements by area is provided below.

Electrical Safety

Electrical Safety Officer.

Each ASD group has it's own Electrical Safety Officer (ESO) to guide the group in matters of electrical safety. Bill Stone is the ESO for the Controls Group.

Unlisted Electrical Equipment

Ideally all electrical equipment should be listed by a nationally recognized test laboratory (NRTL). Unfortunately this is not practical for much of the equipment fabricated by the Controls Group.

Unlisted equipment must be inspected by the group Electrical Safety Officer prior to applying power to that equipment. The ASD Controls Group has a procedure for inspecting (and documenting the inspection) of unlisted equipment:

a) Obtain a "UE"-type document number from the SNS EDIS system.

b) Down load "Approval of Unlisted Electrical Equipment" form (SNS 13) from ASD Electrical Safety Committee webpage:

c) Download the Controls Group's checklist from here.

d) Inspect the equipment yourself per both the above form/checklist.

e) Schedule inspection with Electrical Safety Officer. Electrical Safety Officer will perform his own inspection and sign the "UE" form.

f) The complete "UE" document (form SNS13, the checklist, plus any attachments) should be archived in IMAN. Send the following to DCC personnel so they can put them in IMAN:

· Native file" (e.g. MS Word) copies of checklist and any attachments
· PDF-format copy of the complete document, all pages in one file.
· Paper copy of "UE" form signed by Electrical Safety Officer.

Class I, II, and III Circuits

[Might be worth inserting our earlier analysis of how to handle the Class 1/2/3 circuit vs. tray section business. i.e. Explain when you can use 300V cable.]
